Last week while at the LewisCarnegie and Woody Welch studio, there was a debate. The studio was preparing their polaroid show "EAST of Position" for the EAST AUSTIN STUDIO TOUR. They painted a huge rolling chalkboard wall for the event's signage. Graphic imagery was produced to chalk up on the board. But, their projector wasn't working and time was ticking away before the opening. Much discussion insued about alternative ways to get the job done. Who else might have a projector? Could one be rented? The conversation ended with the suggestion "Why not just do it old school?" We paused. We freaked. We laughed. How could you do such exacting work with chalk without the aid of "art tools"? Needless to say, a projector was found, the wall was chalked beautifully and the event was well recieved. But as an admirer of chalk art, it got me thinking.
- Are there professional chalk artist?
- Do they do it "old school"?
Meet Dana Tanamachi, graphic designer and custom chalk letterer from Brooklyn, New York. And yes, she does it "old school". It is amazing and mezmerizing to watch. She creates large scale chalk installations in NYC. She also applies her chalk lettering to graphic design projects. More time lapse videos of her work HERE.
Postscript:
Ohhh... got a tweet from @dana_tanamachi and she wanted to see our chalk. Here's how LewisCarngie's chalking turned out for the event. Chalk on one side and polaroids on the other. And the studio looked amazing with the blown up polaroids on the walls. Check out the accompanying book with a Classic Crest, Epic Black, Eggshell finish cover.
