How to make a Fold Sing

Everyone is talking about this magazine cover. It seems to be all over the twitterverse. And for good reason, it's amazing! I will be ordering up one for my "keeper" file. It is a true feat of paper engineering, thought, creativity and mathmatics. Feast your eyes and hands on the cover of the November issue of German design magazine, NOVUM. They commissioned PAPERLUX to design and produce this cover. It is made up of 1,000 faceted, colored and registered score lines. They can be folded and bent along these scores to shape the cover into geometric fun. The cover says  - "play with me". Watch the video below to see the "Making of the Cover".

Here are some details about the project.

• 48,000 print passes
• 6 different colored covers created by changing the sequence of the cmyk inks - no new plates were utilized

CA Design Annual: Paper helps to tell the Cabin Bluff story.

Got my copy of COMMUNICATION ARTS Design Annual 52 last week and just got a chance to gaze through it. Glad to see Austin represented and overjoyed with page 102. One of my favorite paper projects of the year gracing the page. It is a gorgeous specimen for CABIN BLUFF,  a hunting and fishing retreat on the Cumberland River. This brochure was a labor of love for the designer, Mark Brinkman. His paper choices really helped to create a hand-crafted feel. Cabin Bluff has a rich heritage and unique personality. Award-winning photographer, Robb Kendrick took all the shots. The brochure  is printed in letterpress and litho on Reich's SAVOY, 100% Cotton, 80 Text and 236 Cover with Sappi McCOY Silk for the photography. A black foil silhouette of a hunting dog graces the cover. The interior pages are french folded and interleaved with the Savoy and McCoy throughout. All bound together with a wrap of Gmund BIER, Bock with bronze screw posts. I have a copy for viewing.

My journal bandolier from Emily at CLEVERHANDS arrived today. It's a strap fitted with small loops for carrying pens, pencils, and other handy tools that can be wrapped around a journal, planner, or other book. It's handmade using fabric and elastic and fits easily around books such as my Moleskine 5.52x8.25 inch journal. I am one of those people that likes to put things down on paper and this bandolier has 7 loops that can hold my different pens/brushes/pencils. Unlike a pencil case it stays with my book keeping all my stuff exactly where I need it to jot, draw and paint. Emily also makes these out of reclaimed rubber. Be sure to check out her shop.

AIGA Austin Annual Report | Paper & Design Goodness

 

I got my copy of the AIGA AUSTIN'S Annual Report last night at the Membership Party. It was designed by Thom Gehring & Jared Tanner of local creative company  - GEHRING CO.   It seems these two are quite handy with a needle also. Each piece has been lovingly, hand-stitched in butterscotch-yellow, waxed linen thread. Olmsted-Kirk was extremely delighted to donate the paper for this project with Randy McCranie from FRENCH PAPER. The cover is POPTONE, Chocolate Fudge, 100 Cover printed in metallic silver and embossed. The inside pages are SMART WHITE, 100 Text. Put simply, it is a gorgeous specimen of design and paper. Fold & Score

Just received a simply gorgeous invitation (this photo doesn't do it any justice) to SAPPI's debut event for their STANDARD No. 4 - Scoring & Folding. It is a unbelievable beauty of paper engineering.  Kit Hinrichs of STUDIO HINRICHS & Trish Witkowski of FOLDFACTORY will be  presenting "Folded Inspiration" on Wednesday, November 10th in the Horchow Auditorium of the DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART. It should be amazing. This edition of Sappi's Standard focuses on folding and bindery. Volume 4 takes readers from folding basics to demonstrations of scoring with actual in-use case studies. Included in this 48 page edition is seven folding samples that readers can hold and try themselves. Can't wait to get my copy and more to share.

BookBinding with AIGA

Had a blast with the AIGA Chapter of Austin Community College making books this weekend. There were so many great looking books created.  We hand distressed hardboard covers and then coptic stitched in our pages. A real treat.

Binding Goodness

I am always looking for different types of bindery. Stumbled onto this book with rollabind like discs for binding. Found it while looking for printed samples of FRENCH PAPER, CONSTRUCTION. This gorgeous project is printed on Safety Orange, 100 Cover. Construction comes in nine colors and three whites. They're 100% recycled and acid free. I saw this from MYNDOLOGY and ordered it up immediately along with some silver metal discs. I was so happy to see it arrive in the mail yesterday. The arrows you see are actually "laser cut".  And the piece was designed by Duffy and Partners. Can you say awesome??? Can't wait to buy the punch.
