Come and Make It: AIGA Austin Design Ranch

AIGA Austin's Design Ranch is just around the corner. The countdown has begun to April 18th. Grace Hall, Ranch Director and the rest of the folks heading things up are busy getting things spiffy for this sold out three-day event in the Texas Hill Country. This will be the 10th DR and it's sure to be memorable.

I'll be working the next two weekends finalizing materials for my workshop: "Rock. Paper. Stitches." My employer, Olmsted-Kirk - the oldest and rootinest, tootinest paper company in the great state of Texas is sponsoring my three workshops. Paper materials are being supplied by my fellow paper enthusiast and head honcho at Reich Paper, Mr. Duke Reich. The papers they make are beyond luxe. I am excited to be sharing them. We'll be utilizing the super thick-100% cotton, Savoy and the felty goodness of Odeon. You'll be drooling. Promise.

Beyond my workshops, I am looking forward to spending quality time with quality folks making things and kicking back. Here's just a few items on my DR to-do list.

• Meet Anna Bond from Rifle Paper
• Sit in the calm presence of Dana Tanamachi
• Eat a Dorito and Mayo sandwich with Geoff Peveto of Decoder Ring
• Letterpress with Dirk Fowler from F2design
• Sign paint with Paul Fucik and Joel Swec from Arts & Recreation
• Spend time with my girls: Kelly and Diana
• Eat some great Ranch grub! I am talking about that peach cobbler!

Take a Sneak Peek @ARTCRANK ATX

I've been following Austin author, Austin Kleon on twitter for a while. Living his book tour life through tweets and his blog as he steals across America. Steal Like an Artist, his latest book is now on the New York Time's best seller list. I was so pleased to see his tweet this month that his book tour had finally landed in his hometown here in Austin at Book People. I grabbed the kiddo and headed to see his talk and get a copy signed for her. Rather than reading from his book, he took us on a journey with him through slides and a full circle of his life as an author. Really good stuff. If you haven't visited his blog, it's great and he really shares his creative life there. Austin, thanks for inspiring me and the little one.  If you missed him, I hear on June 27th, there will be a joint event "nooner" at the Alamo Drafthouse with AIGAAustin and Adfed. It will be a treat to see and hear him again.

@AIGAaustin wants More Cowbell

Good Design still Matters

Hatch Show Prints is a great American poster shop in Nashville, Tennessee. For more than a century, Hatch has produced show-posters for legends such as Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, the Beastie Boys – and now Domtar.  A Hatch Show Print poster produced today is still created the way it was in the late nineteenth century –  letterpressed – that is hand-carved, hand-set, hand-inked and hand-cranked. Hatch has created a poster in support of Domtar's donation to  AIGA's "Design for Good" intiative – an effort to recognize and support pro bono social engagement design projects.

“‘Design for Good’ is more than just pro bono design projects. It is a broader movement to encourage and enable designers to bring their creative problem solving to the assistance of their communities as they approach community and social problems,” according to Richard Grefé, executive director of AIGA. “‘Design for Good’ offers a means for creative professionals to play a central role among concerned citizens, demonstrating their commitment, talent and leadership to power change in ways that are important to others in their communities.”

You'll be able to get a copy of this limited edition Hatch Show Print at Boston’s HOW Design Conference June 21st thru 25th.  It's letterpressed on Cougar, Natural, 80 Cover.

@ARTCRANK debuts in Austin Feb. 24th

ARTCRANK ATX show poster by Big Table Studio.

ARTCRANK is coming to Austin! Thirty local designers are creating hand-made, bike-inspired posters. The show will be Friday, February 24th at Pine Street Station and then it will go on to Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop. Admission is free and the limited edition, signed and numbered posters will be available for $40 each. I've gotten a chance to peek at the designs and it's going to be good. Some are being silkscreened while others are lovingly letterpressed. You'll want these posters, promise.  I am so pleased to have so many of these designs printed on Olmsted-Kirk papers.

“One of the big ideas behind ARTCRANK is that we want to make art as accessible to people as bikes are,” says ARTCRANK founder Charles Youel. “Part of that is price — it’s pretty cool to be able offer limited edition, handmade posters for less than 50 bucks. But it’s also about introducing people to the artists who live in and work in their community. We’ve got 30 artists in our lineup for this first show, and the talent level here is off the charts. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”

Proceeds from beer sales on opening night served in exclusive ARTCRANK pint glasses will benefit LIVESTRONG.
